I think the author’s style to deliver the story is remarkable. The story he had written has its own strength due to the characters he built. Besides, almost in every part of this story, he uses diction. In addition, he also uses metaphorical sentences. He does not use marked sentences; it means that the readers could not directly understand the whole story if they do not pay for their full attention to the plot. The author prefers to use unmarked sentences that contain implicit meanings. In my opinion, as one of the readers, the author succeeded to make my curiosity alive during reading that story although at the beginning I had already felt eerie when I figured out the setting. I imagined that the villagers raided my house and then they kicked up a rumpus at night. It was so horrible.
About the author’s intention through this story, I will give some comments and my own interpretation. I my point of view, the author intends to show the conditions of Chinese-Americans, as emigrants. Based on this story, I learned that most of Chinese-Americans have two names- their real names and their international names. They never tell their real names to strangers. Besides, the author wants to tell the readers that the parents usually tell stories about life to strengthen their children’s souls in order they will be ready facing the realities. They really realized about the fact that they are emigrants whom other people can threaten them. As the result, they have to adapt with the society that is rather different from theirs in China. That is why some Chinese-Americans succeed in their new homeland, America.
