I think the author’s style to describe the setting – especially, place - is so remarkable that makes the readers eager for trying figure out it. The story he had written has its own strength due to the characters he built. Besides, he also uses pragmatics in exploring the dialog. The author, in addition, used some symbols and metaphors, such as fences, the title. In my opinion, fence is a symbol of a loyalty to family; it means that Troy is not allowed to cheat on another woman. As one of the readers, the author succeeded to make my curiosity alive during reading that drama although at the beginning I had a little difficulties understanding some words, which are not listed in a standard dictionary.
About the author’s intention through this story, I will give some comments and my own interpretation. I my point of view, the author intend to show the conditions of African-Americans, as immigrants. Based on this story, I learned that there are unequal rights between white and coloured people. The white people have more chances to get better job than the coloured ones. They were often treated as things, which do not have any thought and sensibility, by making them work as slaves due to their strength in working. Through his main character, Troy, Wilson shows a dad who feels jealous to his son who is recruited by a college football team while he himself failed playing baseball in the professional league.
